Azeitao, is known for its red wine, olives and creamy sheep cheese, the latter prized as one of the best in the country, it also features some of the finest quintas (wine production estates) in the region.

Arrabida Nature Park

The Arrabida Natural Park has a UNESCO World Heritage recognition pending.

It is one of the most beautiful and fascinating natural regions of Mediterranean influence, and remains almost untouched in its natural equilibrium.

Along the mountain tops or in the shade of the valleys and hills there is some of the finest and most exceptional scenery in Portugal or, indeed, in the whole world, due to the privileged situation of the range as a watershed between the mast and the interior.

Arrabida's marine ecosystems are of the greatest national and international importance.

What to see and do:

• Beaches: There several marvelous beaches about 15m drive, namely Portinho da Arrabida beach,  Galapos beach and Figueirina beach, with crystalline turquoise waters and a batch of sleepy waterside shanty restaurants where grilled fish and shellfish are the order of the day.

• Wine Cellars: Located in the centre of town, and open to visitors all year round, the wine cellars produce the region’s renowned moscatel wine, as well as a wide variety of popular red and white table wines. Visitors here can sample some of Portugal’s best red table wines and witness the assembly line production process.

• Azeitao’s cheese: This is a typical creamy cheese made with raw sheep milk. The blessings of a mild climate and abundant pasture make this the perfect place to produce this cheese that has a peculiar flavour sometimes defined as the “wild riste of sweet herbs”. It is a cured cheese, of a buttery, semi-soft consistency, white or light yellow in colour, with few or no holes.

• Walking tours: There are several walking tours available in and around Azeitao, such as the “Louro mountain walk”, where you can see windmills, archaeology treasures and enjoy great panoramic views of the Setubal bay and beyond.

• Jeep tours: This is the most popular safari trip practiced in the surroundings of Lisbon, with stopovers in places for fantastic views of the mountain and the ocean. Tip: Combine the tour with a wine and cheese tasting.

• Photographing: With a beautiful and breathtaking scenery, the Arrabida Hills is the place to travel and to be for landscape photographers.

• Golf: Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club offers the finest golfing experience. This “Parkland” course has been marvelously integrated in the landscape with the Arrabida Nature Park. It was the venue for various international golfing events and is ranked on The Top 100 European Golf Courses. Various European Countries have chosen Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club as a training base in preparation for the competitive season.
